Volunteering at C.J.’s 

These guidelines are in place to ease related processes, and ensure a good experience for all helpers and all CJ’s staff.  We reserve the right to use our discretion with these guidelines.

Qualifications:

  • International Skateboard Certification Program / SKATZMinimum 10 years old
  • Must demonstrate a positive attitude, an eagerness to help, and an eagerness to learn

What’s included?
A CJ’s staff member will initially meet every volunteer to ensure suitability and to assess what tasks they can help with. All volunteers must call 24 hours in advance of requested time to volunteer to ensure GM has time to prepare a list of tasks for their shift. The senior staff member working the front desk will choose tasks from this list to delegate to the volunteer throughout their shift.

Volunteers are eligible for 10% discounts on food and concessions only during the shifts they volunteer for. Discounts from pro shop are not offered through the volunteer program. All of this is subject to availability. Hours worked are admissible for community service school requirements.

All Instructors and Coaches at C.J. Skateboard Park and School are trained using the International Skateboard certification Program and SKATZ Skateboard Teaching system.  For more information on these great programs, please visit www.GoSKATZBoarding.com

 


CIT (Coach-in-Training)

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 13 years old
  • Must demonstrate a positive attitude, an eagerness to help, an eagerness to learn, an interest in teaching skateboarding, and a minimum of basic skills on a skateboard (safety, falling, maneuvering)

What’s included?
CJ’s is now offering a structured CIT program that sets skaters on their path to becoming great skateboard instructors and coaches. Skills developed through CJ’s CIT program will also help participants interested in pursuing leadership roles in other recreational activities. The CIT program introduces participants to lesson planning, a variety of learning styles, and Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) principles as well as keeping CIT’s up to date on changes to structure of programs and camps at CJ’s.

CIT’s are presented opportunities to lead lesson parts with individual students and to aid in the delivery of group lessons, as well as other complementary tasks as identified by senior instructors. CJ’s CIT Program typically begins with a full-day training session, which costs $125. CIT’s are eligible to apply to assist with camps throughout the summer. Each week costs $125, which includes training and food. CIT’s ride for free the days they are training. If CIT’s choose to become Volunteers they become eligible for discounts on food and concessions once they have worked 6 consecutive hours. CIT’s are eligible for 10% discounts on food and concessions only during the shifts they are training. Discounts from pro shop are not offered through the CIT program.

 


Junior Instructor

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 14 years old
  • Must demonstrate a positive attitude, an eagerness to help, an eagerness to learn, an interest in teaching skateboarding, and a minimum of basic skills on a skateboard (safety, falling, maneuvering)
  • Must have a minimum of 100 hours experience as a CJ’s CIT (or equivalent)

What’s included?
CJ’s Jr. Instructors are instructors training to become senior instructors and then coaches. They are supported in their development as instructors, with opportunities to train and work as a Jr. Instructor during Summer Camp, special events and or at other times. Jr. Instructors may be eligible for an honorarium.

CJ’s will also arrange training and cover the cost of certification with the Canadian Red Cross for Emergency First Aid CPR/AED Level C, which is valid for 3 years at one of the scheduled clinics during the year on site at park. This is usually a full day course with lunch supplied, and includes a laminated certification card. Jr. Instructors are eligible for staff rate discounts on food and concessions as well as in the pro shop.


All volunteers, CITs and Jr. Instructors will also be invited to CJ’s annual volunteer appreciation event at the skatepark or offsite where certificates for service will be awarded.
